Silt Treatment Process

Silt water treatment is the process of removing silt and other suspended solids from water. It can be used to treat drinking water, wastewater, and water from construction sites.

Why Treat Silt Water

  • Untreated silty water can pollute watercourses.

  • Used to treat wastewater from SWD (Storm water drain).

  • Silt can be caused by organic colloids, algae, iron corrosion products, and fine particulate matter.

  • It chokes on SWD and sewer lines which will lead to heavy flooding

What is silt

Silt is a granular material of a size between sand and clay whose mineral origin is quartz and feldspar. Silt may occur in soil or as sediment mixed in suspension with water and soil in a water body such as a river.

Silt has larger particles than clay and is mostly inorganic in nature. The particle size of silt is around 0.075 mm and exhibits slightly plastic behaviour.

Applications of silt

Silt finds many applications in the areas of bricks, crops, sedimentary rocks as well as concrete. Silt is usually fertile and hence is an excellent addition for crop growing. In traditional Indian agricultural methods, silt gathered in village tanks and lakes was reapplied to fields in order to improve soil fertility. As an example, there are a reported 36,000 tanks in Karnataka state, built with centuries old expertise, that act as water storage systems for communities. They also trap the silt in run-off, and this silt, rich in plant nutrients, is an economically viable means of increasing soil fertility.
